ABOUT KARATE-DO INTERNATIONAL

SENSEI TERRY WINGROVE

Terry WingroveSensei Wingrove has been training in Budo for over 55 years, spending over 21 years training and living in Japan. He is 9th Dan Jujutsu, 8th Dan Karate, 3rd Dan Judo and 3rd Dan Aikido.

Sensei Wingrove captained the first English karate team in 1963 to the 1st European championships and studied in Europe with Vernon Bell, Tetsugi Murakami, Hiro Mochizuki, Tadashi Abe and Masamichi Noro before he went to Japan in the mid 60’s where he worked as the only foreigner at the national and international HQ of karate in Tokyo. This enabled him to study with many of the legends of Budo such as Chojiro Tani, Gogen Yamaguchi, Hiranori Otsuka, Morihei Ueshiba, Kimbei Sato and Hideo Tsuchiya, in the Golden Age of Martial Arts.

SENSEI CARL LINDLEY

Carl LindleySensei Carl Lindley 5th Dan, is the chairman of the K.D.I. He started Karate 1975 in Shotokan under Sensei’s Bob Hitchens & Phil Duvall at the Preston Shotokan Club, then at the famous ‘Red Triangle’ Club in Liverpool.

Sensei Lindley attained his (Shodan) black belt in 1981 under Sensei Andy Sherry 8th Dan one of the first Karate-ka in the UK to be graded to (Shodan) black belt in 1966. Sensei Lindley is a former British Police Karate champion in Kata & Kumite, and has won many open championship medals over the last 25 years or so.

Carl has trained with many of today’s legends in Karate, including Masters Kanazawa, Enoeda and Kawazoe, Andy Sherry, Bob Poynton, Greg Wallace, Sensei Ticky Donovan, Tyrone Whyte and many more. A traditionalist at heart, he is a true Karate-ka with real fighting spirit.

Sensei Lindley has also been Sensei Tony Gray’s training partner for over 11 years. He was awarded his 5th Dan by sensei Tyrone Whyte in 2005, and is a Chief Inspector in the Metropolitan Police Service.

Carl was the Chairman of the English Karate Federation 2007 & as of the 2008 elections remains on the Board.

SENSEI TONY GRAY

Tony GraySensei Tony Gray started Karate in 1984 aged 15 at the Aldborough Hatch Ishinryu Karate Club under Sensei’s Cecil Hackett and Dave Webster Tony graded to 2nd Kyu. He was then advised to train at the Atherton Sports Centre, East London under the Instruction of Former British, European and World Team Champion Sensei Tyrone Whyte 6th Dan. Tony attained his Shodan Dan 1992, Nidan 1995, Sandan 1999.

Tony was a registered night club door supervisor in central London for over 4 years. During this time he started training on the senior E.K.G.B all styles National Squad and regularly fought for a place in the English and British Karate Team being selected in 1995 for a match against the World Team Champions France in Bordeaux, Sensei Tony was awarded his 4th Dan in 2003 by Sensei Tyrone Whyte 6th Dan.

Sensei Tony has coached English/British champions & Internationals at his dojo winning over 30 national and International Medals in the last few years.

The aim of the K.D.I is to maintain a high standard of Karate-do giving its members the opportunity to train in other arts with a non-political approach, to be able to support.
